Pet Guide

With so many years of experience in the veterinary field, working with many of the local professionals and agencies, I have gained a wealth of knowledge and information to share that will help you when you need information about pets whether they are yours or someone elses... feel free to pass along the information, I am happy to share.

Tips For Grooming

Ask directly about services, costs and hours so you have a clear understanding of what to expect. You may need to "train" your dog for grooming. Start by massaging his coat when you feed him. Then introduce brushing or combing. Each day, increate the grooming time. Before going make sure your pet is up-to-date on veterinary treatment, including vaccines and sterilization. Spayed and neutered pets are generally calmer, and sterilized dogs are less likely to bite. Let your groomer know of any special handling or health issues. If your pet needs sedation, find a vet who employs a groomer.

Your first appointment should be to talk to your groomer. Ask about their experience and training, certification, handling procedures.

Ask to see their supplies. Ask about what type of restraint is used if a need arises. A good groomer will ask you questions about the type of dog you have, any prior grooming experiences and any fears your dog may have. They will ask what type of cut you want, and discuss your expectations.

Find out which services are included in the fee (bathing, brushing, ear/eye cleaning, nail trimming, drying, teeth).

Pet Foods

The Dog Food Advisor is published as a public service to help you make a more informed decision when shopping for dog food. The Dog Food Advisor’s approach to evaluating dog food is based upon one important principle…No dog food product can ever be magically better than the ingredients that were used to make it

That’s why it’s so important for you to know what’s actually in your dog’s food — before you buy it. And the only reliable way I know to do that is to carefully examine the label.

No-Kill Shelter

The Save Our Strays (S.O.S.) Animal Shelter was founded in 1981 to rescue stray and unwanted dogs and cats. Six years of hard work by dedicated volunteers and financial contributions from individuals and businesses allowed us to open our no kill shelter in 1987. They receive no public funding. They are a private, 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization that relies exclusively on contributions and fund raising.

PLEASE CONSIDER DONATING TO THIS WORTHY CAUSE.

S.O.S. focuses the majority of its efforts in three areas. First, and foremost, S.O.S. provides a safe home for unwanted dogs and cats. Secondly, it tries to place these animals in good homes. Finally, S.O.S. seeks to educate the public about dog and cat overpopulation and the benefits of adopting a companion pet from a shelter. S.O.S. serves this community and is dedicated to maintaining a no kill shelter.

Toxic Foods & Pets

Most dogs love food, and they’re especially attracted to what they see us eating. While sharing the occasional tidbit with your dog is fine, it’s important to be aware that some foods can be very dangerous to dogs. This is a list of the common foods to make sure your dog never gets access to.

Avocado, Alcohol, Bread Dough, Candy & Gum, Chocolate, Coffe, Tea and other Caffeine, Ethanol (Also Known as Ethyl Alcohol, Grain Alcohol or Drinking Alcohol), Fat Trimmings & Bones, Grapes and Raisins, Hops, Macadamia Nuts, Milk and Other Dairy Product, Moldy Foods, Onions and Garlic, Persimmons, Peachs & Plums, Raw Eggs, Raw Meat & Fish, Salt, Sugary Foods & Drinks, Yeast Dough, Your Medicine, Xylitol

Dogs explore with their mouth. And, no matter how cautious you are, it's possible your dog can find and swallow what it shouldn't. It's a smart idea to always keep the number of your local vet, the closest emergency clinic, and the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center -- (888) 426-4435 -- where you know you can find it in an emergency. And, if you think your dog has consumed something that's toxic, call for emergency help at once.

Cindy knows...

With over 28 years in the veterinary industry I have accumulated a lot of experience... AND a lot of knowledge about pets.

Here are just a few topics on pet information I think is important to share. My hopes are that my website can become the place where I can share my knowledge and you can go to learn important and useful information to help with your pets needs... whether its basic helpful info, knowledge about making the right decisions on what to feed your pets, or simply looking for a recommendation for specific pet services in the area, I have put together a little "pet guide" to help you learn and make better choices.  Enjoy!
